Sometimes there is a simple reason why your oven isn’t heating like it should. Here are some tips, from the many years of experience UNEED Electrical & Appliance Services have had in repairing both gas and electric ovens. In fact, when we are called out to fix an oven it is quite often because it is not heating properly.

With our tips you may be able to fix your oven yourself and save a call out fee. If you find that the reason your oven is not working is quite complex it is always best to call an electrician or qualified appliance technician.

Your electric oven is not heating up at all

If your electric oven is not switching on and the fan, light and clock are not working as well, there is a good chance that the circuit breaker may have tripped or the fuse may have been blown. When you fix the problem, but the fuse blows again or the circuit break trips again, it is best to get an electrician to check as the problem may be more serious and require a professional to fix it.

Some ovens have a separate socket and it’s plug may have come loose. This may be the reason your oven is not working. The socket is usually hidden behind a drawer or in a nearby cupboard. When you find the socket you will need to check that it is plugged in correctly and switched on.

Your gas oven is not heating up at all

A faulty or dirty igniter is a common reason for a gas oven not heating up at all. You may need to check your manual to find out where the igniter is. It might be easy to locate the igniter or you may have to lift the bottom oven panel to access it.

If you choose to go ahead and clean the igniter it is important to make sure you turn off your oven first. Once you have done this, you can use a toothbrush to clean the igniter. If this doesn’t fix the issue, then you should call a qualified appliance repair technician or electrician as the igniter may need to be replaced.

Your oven is heating up but not at the correct temperature

All ovens have a temperature sensor. If it is not working correctly then you oven is likely not heating to the right temperature. The temperature sensor is a thin tube between 5cm and 10cm long. The temperature sensor is usually at the top of the inside of the oven.

Once you have located the temperature sensor you need to check to see if it is sitting correctly. It should NOT be touching the oven itself. If it is, then you need to gently bend the sensor to make sure it is not touching the oven. If you do this and the oven is still not heating up correctly then it is likely the temperature sensor needs to be replaced.

Error codes on the digital display of your oven

You will need your owner’s manual to determine what the issue the error code relates to. The code could be for anything from a faulty button to a defective control board. The manual should also set out the steps you need to undertake to correct the error. Unless the issue is a complex one, there is a good chance that you will be able to sort out the problem yourself.

Your oven door not closing

An oven door not closing properly is another common reason why an oven is not heating correctly. It is always good to check to make sure the door is closing correctly, when you have a problem with your oven, as it may not be obvious. Hinges wearing out are quite often the reason why the door is not closing as it should. If this is the case we recommend that you get the hinges replaced as soon as possible as the glass on your oven door may break if the hinges break completely. This is especially true as it can be quite expensive to replace the glass on an oven door.

You may also need to check the seal on your oven door. If it is broken, cracked or out of shape then it is time to get it replaced.
